Chip
A chip is a shot played near the green. You can use a club with different lofts to control how the ball rolls.

A chip is a shot that is usually played just off the green. You can choose to use a club with different loft to get the desired roll on the ball. If you're in a position where you don't have much green between you and the flag, it's usually recommended to use a club with more loft, for example a lob wedge. This is to get the ball out at a higher angle and land more softly by the flag. If, on the other hand, you have more green to work with and the opportunity to roll the ball a longer distance, it's usually preferred to use less loft on the club. An example of this is the 7-iron.
