How much does it cost to play golf?

The cost of playing golf varies, but there are three main factors that affect it. Learn more here.

By Michael Persson

The short answer is that it depends a great deal on three different factors: Green Card, golf membership and golf equipment.

If you want to play golf really cheaply, one possible scenario is to borrow clubs from a friend and then play on a so-called Pay & Play course, where anyone can play golf. In that case you don't even need a Green Card or golf membership. There are a number of golf clubs that offer Pay & Play and we recommend checking with the individual club what applies.

In that case only a fee (called a green fee) normally needs to be paid to play on the individual course. To get access to play on more courses beyond Pay & Play courses, you need both a Green Card and an active membership in a golf club.

Green Card

The cost of a Green Card course varies quite a lot and depends largely on the content and format. A "traditional" Green Card course (also called a beginners' course) usually includes a certain number of hours of group training (normally about 6–12 people per group) led by a coach. Such a beginners' course often costs between 1,500–2,500 SEK.

An alternative for getting started in golf and getting your Green Card is to take the course digitally via us at Golf4u, where you get access to our digital course for 12 months with the opportunity for revision for only 1,195 SEK.

Golf membership

The cost of a membership in a golf club varies greatly depending on which club you join and what your membership includes.

The cheapest memberships cost around 350–500 SEK. For this you get a so-called "green-fee membership" (also called a "mailbox membership"), which means you become an active member of a club for normally one calendar year.

Some clubs that offer this may have additional perks, such as getting to play 1–2 times for free at your home club. But as a rule, if you have a green-fee membership you need to pay a green fee for each round, whether it's at your home club or you're playing as a guest at another club.

A membership that gives you free play at your home course normally costs between 4,000–9,000 SEK depending on which club you join. On top of this there may be a cost for buying a share or playing right, and the arrangement at each club can differ quite a lot.

Golf equipment

If you want to get started playing golf, it can often be an advantage to buy a starter set containing, for example, 10 clubs and a bag. This normally costs between 2,500–5,000 SEK if you buy new from a shop.

If you buy a similar set second-hand, the cost can be significantly lower. There are of course also golf clubs that are considerably more expensive, and some players can have clubs in their bag where the retail price exceeds 20,000 SEK in total for all clubs.
