When putting, you can grip the club however you like, as long as you feel that you have support for your movement. In your set-up it's important that you get your head over the ball so that your eyes have a vertical line down to the ball. This makes it easier to maintain a straight pendulum motion. You can stand however you like, but the recommendation is shoulder-width apart, and the ball position should preferably be slightly forward of the centre of your stance — this is so you can more easily strike the ball slightly on the upswing of your motion and get the ball rolling sooner.
The motion of your swing can be compared to a clock pendulum. Straight back and straight through. Try also to avoid using your wrists to generate speed on the ball. Use your large muscle groups and let your shoulders initiate the movement. Feel free to practise in front of a mirror so you can see for yourself what your motion looks like.
